Being a coastal nation, it should come as no surprise that seafood has attained a national status here. The freshness combined with succulent Asian flavors is a perfect blend for a decadent dining experience. The multitude of flavors tingle the taste buds and provide an aromatic entrée to a flavorsome meal. While, I have often eaten prawns and fish and even bravely tried a squid, I had never tasted a big honest to goodness Singapore Crab. Considering that the Chilli crab is a revered national dish, it was high time I had one!
So, after a hearty recommendation from our friends, we headed over to Long Beach at east coast for my first every Chilli Crab experience. Boy oh boy, was I excited!
'I don't know how to eat crab', was the first thing I told my friends on the way there.
"Its easy", my friend replied. 'just use the pliers".
"Huh, wha what ?", I blurted out! "I have to use pliers"!?!! Confessions of a shocked first time crabber.
The packed restaurant |
Spinach in Garlic |
Our friends had on numerous occasions raved about the pepper crab. While, I love anything with pepper in it, I also wanted to get my hands on the chilli crab. Apart from the crabs, we ordered Spinach in garlic , drumsticks and drinks to wash down our food.
Chicken Drumsticks |
Our starters, Spinach in Garlic and Chicken drumsticks were the first to arrive and as expected, they were delicious! I loved the way they blanch the spinach to perfection to bring out the exotic flavors.
The chicken drumsticks were dipped in fruit sauce that had a perfect blend of sweet and savory. Every bite was crunchy with a subtle sweetness to it.
That's an Orchid flower on our plate. Interesting and colorful way to decorate , isn't it? One of my favorite flowers, I loved the vivid colors of the Singapore Orchids.
The famous Chilli Crab |
Pepper Crab |
And here, came the pepper crab coated in tangy and spicy pepper sauce. This was a pre decided favorite and everyone instantly grabbed whichever part they could and started using their pliers. After watching my friends do it, I grabbed one and set to work. Guess what? It isn't that difficult and it is an experience in itself. Its like you are made to work for your food and once you do get the food, you realize, the hard work was so worth it!
The Long beach seafood restaurant is the original creator of the pepper crab in Singapore. Many say that this is the best they have ever had! So, if you are in Singapore, do drop a visit to sample a 60 year tradition!
