Michaela Anchan

A Kiwi expat  in Singapore, Michaela is the founder of Woolf Works, a collaborative working space for women. Situated among the quaint shop houses and colorful by lanes of Joo Chiat, Woolf works encourages women who work from home to indulge in a distraction free work environment and become a part of a diverse and supportive community. Through this initiative, Michaela strives to support the entrepreneurial community in Singapore and empower women to follow their dreams .

Where are you from and when did you move to Singapore?

I am from Wellington, New Zealand originally and have lived in South Korea and Mumbai, India before moving to Singapore towards the end of 2011.

First impressions about Singapore?

My sister has lived here since 1999 so Singapore was a very easy, comfortable move for me, especially coming from Mumbai. I spent hours wandering the supermarkets when I first arrived, I loved all the produce and seafood available here! I felt very comfortable here from the very beginning.

What's your favorite thing about Singapore?

Safety for the kids, lots to do in the weekends and great food choices! Its also a very transparent and easy place to do business - both in the corporate world and as an entrepreneur.

Favorite weekend getaways?

We've done a couple of awesome 'staycations' on Sentosa as the kids are still little, and as a family have loved Ho Chi Minh, Kota Kinabalu, Bali and Koh Samui for great short holidays.

What's the best part about being an Expat here?

It's the best of east meets west for us - and as we are a mixed-culture family that is very important for us and for the kids. Its easy to be a global family as there are so many other global families here - my Kiwi-Indian daughter is in bilingual mandarin class along with kids from all corners of the planet, it's such an amazing opportunity for her. We feel very lucky to be here and hope to stay for the long term.
